Educational Park “Branice” – first open-air museum in Krakow.

The open-air museum of wooden architecture being built in Branice will present the folk culture of the ethnographic group of Western Cracovians. On an area of 3.5 hectares, there will be 10 homesteads, an inn, a church, an educational and exhibition building with office space, as well as a green meadow, an orchard and a parking lot. The open-air museum will make available to visitors wooden architecture objects, mainly from the area of the Krakow Municipality, dating from the beginning of the 19th century to the 1940s.

The “Branice” Educational Park is part of the main component of the “Przylasek Rusiecki” Recreation and Leisure Center, which is being developed as part of the “Kraków – Nowa Huta of the Future” project.

What structures will ultimately be featured in the open-air museum?

According to the concept that has been developed, the “Branice” Educational Park, currently under construction, will feature structures from Kraków and the surrounding area, dating from the early 19th century to the 1940s: cottages, farm buildings, an inn, and a religious building (a church or chapel)

BEHIND THE SCENES

How is an open-air museum created?

The third attempt to create Kraków’s open-air museum began in 2019. Its creation involved more than 70 site visits to dozens of locations, technical surveys of 33 structures, and the collection of approximately 800 artifacts.

The process of relocating a single building involves a detailed inventory, design work, followed by disassembly, conservation, restoration of damaged elements, and reassembly at the final destination.

What will be there?

The project, designed as an educational park, is intended to be a vibrant space, a destination for excursions (including hiking and biking trips), a place for residents to relax, and a response to the desire to explore the authentic, unique, and culturally significant landscape of the countryside near Kraków.

LOCATION

Where is Kraków’s open-air museum being built?

We are in the eastern part of Kraków, in Nowa Huta, on the site of the former village of Branice.

The plot where the “Branice” Educational Park is being built is located at the intersection of Gen. Michał Karaszewicz-Tokarzewski Street and Tatarakowa Street.

The park is part of the “Przylasek Rusiecki” Recreation and Leisure Center.
