On July 4, 2019, an official agreement was signed to guarantee the granting of an EU grant of PLN 59 million from the Regional Operational Program of the Małopolska Region for 2014-2020 for the construction of the Economic Activity Zone – Nowa Huta of the Future. The signatories were: Deputy Marshals of the Małopolska Voivodeship, Łukasz Smółka and Tomasz Urynowicz and the Chairman of the Board of Kraków Nowa Huta of the Future SA Artur Paszko.
The ceremony was also attended by the Deputy Mayor of the City of Krakow for Sustainable Development Jerzy Muzyk.
In October last year, the authorities of Małopolska Voivodeship and the Board of Kraków Nowa Huta of the Future SA signed a conditional agreement with the guarantee of a grant for the project entitled “Comprehensive preparation of investment areas of the Economic Activity Zone – Nowa Huta of the Future”. Its entry into force was conditional upon the successful completion of the notification procedure of this project to the European Commission, in terms of public aid. The last months have passed under formal arrangements between employees of the Marshal’s Office of the Małopolska Voivodeship, the Office of Competition and Consumer Protection, the European Commission, as well as Kraków Nowa Huta of the Future SA, which finally enabled the signing of the co-financing agreement.
The Economic Activity Zone (SAG) is one of the most important components of the strategic project “Krakow – Nowa Huta of the Future”. It covers almost 40 hectares of area located on brownfield areas. Its great advantage is the communication accessibility – location in the immediate vicinity of the national road No. 79, the proximity of the S7 expressway and the A4 motorway, as well as the vicinity of the railway infrastructure.
The undertaking is a response to the demand for investment areas earmarked for industrial activity in the area of Kraków. The project will allow the city to “regain” almost 40 hectares of unused brownfield areas, which will serve the development of companies mainly from the sector of small and medium-sized enterprises. It will be a space open to entities from various industries, with particular emphasis on Intelligent Specializations of the Małopolska Region (including chemistry, IT technologies, biotechnology, sustainable energy, metal production, electronics, creative industries and free time). The entrepreneurs from Poland and abroad will find favourable conditions for running a business and investing there. It is assumed that approximately 50 new investments will be located in this area, which will also affect the creation of new jobs. Thanks to this approach, the activities of the new Zone will fit into the strategic goals not only of Krakow, but also of the whole Małopolska.
The axis of the project is Igołomska Street, currently being reconstructed, and the area lying on both sides has been divided into three sub-areas. The largest of them – Igołomska North has an area of over 17 hectares. The Igołomska South is almost 16 hectares, while the Igołomska West is 6.5 hectares. Co-financing includes the purchase of a part of real estate, providing specialized works – including demolition and earthworks, reconstruction of colliding power lines, construction of internal communication and technical infrastructure, development of accompanying investments of green areas. A significant share in expenses will be the costs of bringing technical infrastructure to the borders of the Zone.
The total cost of investment named “Comprehensive preparation of investment areas of the Economic Activity Zone – Nowa Huta of the Future” is over PLN 85 million, of which almost PLN 59 million will be co-financed from European Funds under the Regional Operational Program of the Małopolska Region for 2014-2020, Measure 3.1 Economic Activity Zone, Sub-measure 3.1.1. Economic Activity Zone – ITI, for which the Intermediate Body is Stowarzyszenie Metropolia Krakowska (the Krakow Metropolis Association).
The Economic Activity Zone will be a part of the Branice Science and Technology Park created in the framework of the “Kraków – Nowa Huta of the Future” project, where the main objective is the economic recovery of the eastern part of Krakow and, as a further result, of the whole Małopolska. The concept assumes creating a space for scientific research and technical development of national and even international significance. The enterprises from the high technology sector and infrastructure investments are to serve this purpose.
In the period preceding the signing of the agreement, the Kraków Nowa Huta of the Future SA has conducted intensive works, aiming at preparing the formal implementation of the project. The company completed the acquisition of necessary lands and conducted reconciliations on urban investments, which are complementary to the project. At that time, under a public tender, Contract Engineers were also selected for two of the three SAG sub-areas. Their main task is, among others: technical and professional consulting in the process of preparing and conducting the tender procedure, supervision over project works and over the implementation of construction works. Soon, the announcement of proceedings for the selection of General Contractors is planned.
